  13.  @terrific804  That's exactly how seeking asylum works. You seem to be confusing seeking asylum with receiving it. Asylum seekers are given entry pending trial, and can be denied thereafter. And yes, seeking asylum is a right. You should probably read up a bit more, as 193 of the 195 countries have ratified at least one of the nine binding treaties that are directly influenced by the declaration. Your number is in reference to the original 1948 vote, when only 58 countries even had UN membership. None voted against.

  18. Not instead of healthcare. Assisted suicide is an option for terminally ill patients. It's actually more ethical than the alternative when approached correctly. The NHS is dramatically underfunded, and Brexit didn't help matters, worsening the staff shortages. We spend less than France, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Germany, Austria and Netherlands. Even with all of that, we are somewhere in the top 10 to 15 for healthcare globally. The alternative would be the US system, which is both dramatically more expensive, and covers far less. Medical debt is the leading cause of bankruptcy. Coverage costs hundreds per month, and that's before you even use your insurance. If you use your insurance your deductible before you get any coverage can be hundreds or even thousands. The truth is that while people whine about the NHS, the alternative is a total disaster.

Those breakthroughs often get massive grants from the governemnt, and are restricted from portions of their own populous due to financial constraints. They are literally making money off people's pain and suffering. Yes, it would work. The UK has birthright citizenship. People pay more now than under a comparable nationalised system.

Especially as migrants traditionally pay far more into the system than they receive in any sort of benefit. Sweden btw has a population of just over 10 million, around one thirtieth of the US. From 2011 to 2015 they accepted an increasing number of asylum seekers, climaxing with 162K in a single year, the equivalent of the US accepting over 5 million asylum seekers. Their healthcare system is 4th in the world.

  25.  @sanniepstein4835  No. The Federal Reserve saw an impending crash about the happen and increased interest rates to put the brakes on. At the time people were investing 10 times the mortgage on their homes, and the subsequent losses were catastrophic. Increasing rates meant people invested less, and markets slowed, allowing for a smaller crash. The only way you could possibly argue that this was the Fed's fault is if you believe the stock market quadrupling in 9 years is a sustainable growth rate, and would continue infinitely.

  26. Harsher punishment doesn't work. The big issue is that gun control is too local. You can't stop criminals in Chicago getting guns when they can just go to any gun shop in Illinois and purchase as many as they want. So any study on gun control that they reviewed doesn't show that gun control doesn't work, it shows that these localised gun control measures are ineffective.

  32.  @allicientisglobal7678  Not really, since many were held upwards of a year, human rights organisations have estimated there are still well over 10,000 still wrongfully held, and the recent shift to mass trials and convictions will likely result in many innocent people being imprisoned alongside real criminals. Interviews with some of those 7,000 released reveal many view the actual numbers of innocent people as even higher than estimated by human rights groups.

What about the people caught up in the new mass trial process, where innocents can be tried with gang members? The previous government made deals with the gangs long before Bukele. And no, that does not disprove my statement. Seriously, read any dystopian novel about safety at the price of freedom. And no, SOME innocent people were let go. Many more are thought to be wrapped up in this.

  44.  @augcaes  If you look at the actual numbers the homicides from 2022 to 2023 dropped by about 300. Most of them were also gang members. Using that to justify the 20,000 estimated falsely imprisoned is a big much.

  45.  @augcaes  The current gang imprisonment program didn't start until 2022. The homicide rate had dropped every year before then since 2015. So yes, I do think the drop was at least 80% due to the previous government's policies of negotiating with organised crime. As for the 20,000 number, that's quoted directly from human rights organisation, Humanitarian Legal Aid.

  46.  @augcaes  If you want I can be more exact. In 2015 the homicide rate was 103. In 2021, the year before the crackdown, it was 17.6. In 2023 it was 2.3. Of the drop from 103 to 2.3, a reduction of 100.7, 85.4 was before the crackdown. 85.4/100.7 is 84.8%, so about 85%. I love that you trust a government that is actively suspending human rights and threatening their own government over human rights groups. That always goes well.

Add to that the state run media and blatant lies by the current government about the opposition parties, growing poverty and extreme poverty, dramatic reductions in global investments and the current move to bitcoin that could crash the economy overnights, it's not looking good. And that's without even mentioning the democratic issues the country is soon to face.
