1. While the percentage of people who owned slaves was low, literally the top 2% of the population, the number of slaves those people owned made them a much larger proportion of the population than the ownership rate.
2. Yes, Africans were sold into slavery by other Africans, to white Europeans, who then sailed to America to sell those slaves to other white people.
3. Except the Civil War didn't end slavery, it just changed the criteria it could be used. We also had about 100 years of voting inequality and segregation after the Civil War so that's hardly an argument.
4. Actually it's because they could beat the hell out of them and treat them like garbage legally. It's much cheaper to keep people when they don't need clothing or beds.
5. Which countries were these white people enslaved in? Where were they taken? How does this in any way effect the US? We talk about the African slave trade because it directly effects our country, even today.
6. We aren't all slaves today. Comparing US prisons and pre-Civil War slavery to everyday life right now is just downright shameful.
7. Yes, some farmers who owned slaves were black. They were however incredibly rare.
8. Crime rates tend to be higher in poorer communities, which makes sense as black communities were segregated and given zero economic assistance for decades. The long-term effects of these choices are still incredibly apparent today, with neighborhoods still showing strong racial segregation.
