  2. We can be both a republic and a democracy. Republic just means we don't have a monarchy. The country was not founded as a democracy mainly because only white male landowners could vote. The changes we've made to allow more and more people to have voting rights have dramatically shifted the country more and more towards democracy.

  3. It's both a democracy and a republic. You're just confused because you think direct democracy is the only form of democracy, when in reality we have a representative democracy.
