They would lay the dried grain, straw and all, on a prepared and cleaned flat area. Then they would beat them until the hull fell off each grain. The straw would be removed, and the grains with now loose hulls, would be gathered into wide, shallow baskets. The grain would then be tossed up, allowing the wind to blow away the much lighter hull, leaving the heavier grain behind.
This is a well known method, and since you said you could find no information about this, I googled it just to see, and in 2 seconds, I had the answer.
I knew this from before, but your research cant have been very intense.
The beating was usually done with a flail, a long wooden stick, with a smaller wooden stick attached at the end with a rope. then held the long end, and beat the grain with the short end.
