  3. ​​​ @FiveLiver  In 1989 when the Soviet Union fell apart, the country was destitute, and decided to withdraw from the Countries in Eastern Europe it had occupied since 1945. Obviously it feared NATO would move in, so Russia, the successor state to the Soviet Union, had an agreement with NATO countries, that Russia would withdraw from these countries, only in NATO agreed not to to offer membership to these countries. NATO agreed. The treaty was signed in Minsk. Soon after NATO invited Poland Hungary and others to join NATO. Russia protested. NATO ignored the protests. Then NATO invited Ukraine to join NATO. That was the final straw for Russia.
