Both my Parents were from Staunch Catholic families on Tyneside. Both of Irish/Scots origin. I recall my great Granny Browne died in 1966. She was in an open coffin in her flat. A picture of Jesus on one side and the Virgin Mary on the other. My Greif striken Mother had been very close to her, and she was sobbing and talking to her. Touching her hair. It saddened us kids, we never went close. I will never forget it. Wakes had been a thing, where the deceased were celebrated. But open coffins and wakes declined over the years. However my Aunty revived the Wake when her Husband died 10 years ago. It was one of the best parties iv been to in years.

Shush....don't go upsetting the Loyalists and Orange men. They don't like to be reminded their ancesters were Catholics just 500 years ago.😂

Hence Bernadette was a common name amongst Catholic girls when I was a boy in the 1960s. Seems have faded as a popular name? Shame.

 @jharekcarnelian Ah thanks mate. Thats nice. My Granny Vietch was a staunch Catholic too, who revered the Virgin Mary. She died in 1976. Don't miss her out. Both lived in Gateshead. 👍
