  3. The Soiux tribe put up a fight against White settlers in the 1860s and 70s, which culminated in the defeat of General Custer in 1876. However the Soiux them selves had only been in the region since the 1840s, when they conquered then ethnically cleansed the Crow tribe, who had lived there for hundreds of years. Hence some Crow warriors joined General Custer as scouts, with the hope of getting revenge on the Soiux.
