@lellyparker
Well, doesn't really come across like that, when "British people" are still demanding, to "join the EUs SM asap, a bit of FOM included"...
Right now the UK doesn't even fulfill the needed criteria for APPLYING for EU membership.
Joining the EUs SM/EEA/CU is available for EU and EFTA member states ONLY, not though for 3rd countries !!
According to article 126 of the EEA Agreement = SPECIFIES that membership is open to member states either of the EU and or EFTA member states ONLY.
EEA = EUs SM
NOT negotiatable !!
Norway and Iceland/EFTA, are stating since years, that they'll veto the UK joining EFTA, because they don't want a "trouble maker in their club".
Only option available for the UK is to apply for EU membership by fulfilling the Copenhagen Criteria FIRST.
Estimated time needed for joining the EU are minimum 15+ years AFTER fullfilling the Copenhagen Criteria FIRST.
Every EU member state can leave the EU27 on its own free will, but it's up to the EU27 only, to decide, which country can join the EU and when.

@Cider4144 Yes.
This is, what nobody over here at the Continent understands.. over here Brexit isn't even an issue anymore, only for those people, which have family and friends in the UK, like my London born spouse, who had to get dual citizenship because of Brexit, eventhough didn't have a say at the referendum/longer than 15 years abroad, but was trapped in this as well, like so many other...
So many of us over here are trying to inform as much as possible, did already the same BEFORE the referendum, EUs Commission installed a site extra for the Brits only BEFORE the referendum "all about EU - FAQs", one just had to type "EU" and it would have popped up, as it was set up on priority...
Unfortunately the Brits decided to look up about the EU AFTER the referendum, as stated by Google "the most asked question in the UK AFTER the referendum was = what is the EU?".
Since months the EUs Commission is stating clear messages towards the UK, and is doing so the whole time, but seems to never get heard once...
Like that there aren't "re-negotiations" on the table, but a REVIEW coming up to check the implementation of the TCA...
Phil, Max, etc, are still talking about "joining the EUs SM/EEA etc asap", telling them how it goes, that those "option" aren't available for 3rd countries, never get a response...
The UKs electorate have to sort their internal issues ASAP, media included, ..
And yes, I'm afraid, that neither you nor my London born spouse and I will see the UK be back in the EU27 in our life time...
I wish you all the best with greetings from Bremen 🍻 👋

It goes like that ONLY =
the UK has to apply for EU membership by fulfilling the Copenhagen Criteria FIRST (which would be monitored by the EUs Commission), if NONE of the EU27 member states vetos the UK joining the EU, one veto is enough to stop the whole process, only then the UK/GB would receive the status as a "candidate for EU membership", and then the 35 chapters have to be fulfilled and implemented properly (which would be monitored by the EUs Commission), if not done properly, joining process stops instantly, which could take decades.
Every EU member state has one voice, Malta (about 550.000 people) the same as Germany (about 84ish million people), every EU member state has one voice.
Various EUs member states stated recently/analogous, that they'll "wouldn't even take UKs application form" at the moment...
Forgot to say = the EUs Commission is WORKING ON BEHALF of the EU27 member states !!
