Oliver is the car Richard Hammond fell in love for whe he was in Botswana. If you change it beyond recognition it's not Oliver anymore. Ship of Theseus anyone? Would upgrading the engine add more weight making the dry sea crossing impossible? If so I'd argue against it. The car must be as close as possible as what it was when it got popular, Oliver is the car that could. And, while it may never repeat the feat, it should remain as ready to do it again as it was back then. If, however, upgrading the engine wouldn't change the outcome of a second Botswana trip (even if it's just in theory) I wouldn't have any reservations.
