The crazy thing is, the masque's premise is almost identical to the plot of "Hop Frog" by Edgar Allan Poe. Except in that story it was deliberate arson planned ahead of time and there were no survivors.

This wasn't exactly considered normal at the time

I somehow doubt there ever was a joust with sharp weapons. No one is that stupid. It's probably a result of exaggerated retellings about how jousts use to work. Like how these days people still think gladiators were bloodsport

Near where I live there was a scandal where the Indians returned and were outraged because someone had dug up the grave of their late warchief. No one knew what had happened at the time but later a local newsman said the body was stolen by three buffoons who lived north of town simply as a trophy and the skull was on display at "a fraternal order." None of the organizations I contacted had ever heard of the 150 year old scandal and the bones remain to be found

We don't know for a fact the Duke of Orleans had an affair with the Queen. That duke was simply de facto King during the king's insanity as the Queen conspired with him to put the army and diplomacy under his direct command. It was widely rumored he not only had the duties of a king, but the bedchamber of one too.

It sounds like at least part of the story of the battle was politicized. The whole battle was to murder the enemy. No criminal conspiracy during the battle is necessary. Likewise trying to venerate a secular knight as a saint is multiple levels of bull
