Once in a blue moon a smart guys explains an experiment that no one understands but it lets us do something cool so everyone thinks people in his field are great. Back in the industrial revolution there was one magician who had a house full of illusions to make people think he had made an etheric energy generator and collected investor money for three decades. For countless centuries there were basic mistakes in medical manuals about human anatomy because no one wanted to autopsy a human so many things were assumed from animal anatomy. This was only possible because only the rich went to college and people thought physics had been solved, so no one studied it. Several dozen men and one woman were doing most of experiments in theoretical physics.

  45. I think you're missing the trend that science progress comes in waves. I.E. Most performance increases to rockets came within 50 years of Goddard's invention, but now we are near the limit of what is even hypothetically possible. The lack of real progress just means you picked the wrong field to invest your whole life into.

But at least part of it is just coincidence, 25 years ago Al Gore read some speculative articles about the end of the world and made it part of his election campaign, and ever since then it has been a matter of public egos until such a time that some new nonsense gets all the attention
