Part of this is connected to how Hong Kong collects taxes. They tax little directly, but collect an equal amount by auctioning off land leases. Thus the incentive becomes to use as little space as possible

Note this is the censored Chinese version. No, the problem is NOT that only a quarter of the land is suitable for development. The problem is the government collects little taxes and instead opts to raise revenue by auctioning off land leases at deliberately inflated values.

@ferrous3262 you forget that humans don't necessarily care for other humans and often regard each other as competition. This idiot just wants to hoard more stuff for himself

It's how they get away with low taxes. They auction off land leases at inflated prices

@hengedraws That changes nothing, where do you think the government will get all the rent money? Taxes.

@thememaster7 Googling... Only about 1,000 people are literally sleeping on the streets on any given night. Most live in slums in the form of public housing. Most of the expat workers claim overt discrimination and harassment, and much of these conmute every weekend outside the city. I can't find anywhere that says if these guys sleep are homeless on the weekdays.

@Toporzel_PNS_Alt Chinese cities are just as expensive and hours long commutes are common. Most people in the Chinese countryside live off less than 10 bucks a day but everything is cheap. Small cities in China are in the middle.
