"ESG is one of the hottest things in markets right now." ESG also entails ignoring fundamentals and investing based on politicized criteria. ESG will inevitably drive a market bubble of some kind.

It's also particularly ridiculous that a sovereign wealth fund that's the royal family's personal property would be so in tune to recent market trends...

3:30 Debt use to considered a dirty business practice in Europe until the Renaissance. The idea of charging a fee for borrowing money without actually producing anything useful was sometimes seen as a form of extortion. Of course a lot of debt was issued under different names, like how the Templar Knights would lend interest free but charge "rent." Also, European Jews had no such illusions and often weren't allowed to own land or titles so many wealthy Jews became bankers instead. This is where the racial stereotype of a greed Jewish banker comes from.

@fmac6441 there is a gap in the first half of the middle ages where we simply do not know. Except to say most of the norms of the high middle ages came from that era. But you might see why medieval people would see debt as dirty business as their scholars often went off Latin texts who spoke of Rome's troubles with literal debt slavery.

@casacara it's not necessarily it IS, but how it WILL. Like how people indiscriminately buy EV stocks ignoring all logic and risk management, that's an ESG investment.

There's no one group setting ESG standards. In fact, most ESG investment funds set their own standards.

One is a thing, the other is a pejorative that has no connection to what it referred to centuries ago.
