@weird-guy first off, no one fixes what isn't broke and the Soviets were notorious overengineers. Second off, the Russians have economy akin to rural first world where wages are low and cost of living is lower. Like one Yakute village where they have to harvest firewood and hunt for food but trade the pelts and fish for modern goods like computers and cars.

@badluck5647 first off, what did I just say about firewood? Second off, Russia is arctic and semi arctic (during Christmas time the night never really comes to St Petersburg). Plumbing is much more difficult and expensive under these conditions and in remote areas many people do things the old fashioned way. Likewise, Russian regional airlines are the only place where passengers have ever helped push their plane out of the snow. The reason is these airlines are glorified bush pilots serving small cities where the roads are impassable during certain times of the year. The Kazakhs are still even semi-nomadic, crossing borders on large buses routinely for seasonal labor.
