One luxury car salesman said the job feels like begging sometimes because you have to convince some rich idiot that what you're selling will make them happy so you can sell at absurd profit margins. With cows everyone knows what they're good for, profits are fair, so the only way to make fast money is to get lots of work done as God intended.

@vylbird8014 Disney once paid Robbin Williams with a painting valued at 7 million. Sure, Robbin would have rathered the money, but the gift incurred no tax on Disney and all the risk and bother of selling it went to Robbin.

There's also elitism where men buy them just to show off how rich and smart they are. Of course, that means they simply buy pieces that other people seem to like, and they buy them with ill-gotten gains

By now everyone knows the business is dirty

What greedy bastards are doing you mean
11
But that draws in gamblers

Those Roman statues actually had a function because most people would never see the oligarchs they were voting for. Most Roman art was simpler common paintings and mosaics decorating public places, including one red-light district mosaic of gym girls (some things never change).

It sometimes is, sometimes it's tax avoidance, but most of the time it's idiots showing off they're rich

It was always about bragging rights. Although back before photos and copiers artist was a real job because ordinary people would pay you to draw their family's picture and hang it on a wall.
2
It's a form of hidden leverage. You don't sell your stuff, you sell other people's stuff.

That's one of several real world uses for the art market.

Dude, it's all just nonsense to justify some deadbeat's junk being valued at a fortune @mabusestestament
1
@AngryHegel as if half the far east and subcontinent isn't making crude copies of US/EU art/architecture?
1
@AndrewBlucher art is heavily associated with major empires with a +100 year delay
1
old paintings are nothing to speak of either
1
Because no one buys this junk until there's some element of pyramid scheme, and for that you need artificial scarcity.
1
@XandateOfHeaven Wasn't a household name until he was deader than disco
1
No one cares about rich idiots
1
@samdunn717 the two are often the same
1
Sometimes, yes. Sometimes it's actual money laundering. Sometimes it is elitism. Sometimes it is pyramid scheme.
1
The buyers/sellers often aren't the Rich. They are money launderers, gamblers/speculators, counterfeiters, and gangsters blowing away the proceeds of crime.

Especially when it is clearly a zeeo sum game
1
