  2. I think it was partially that and partially because barter is an actual thing in rural China where cash economies are spotty.

Causes of the bankruptcies include wild speculation and leverage in the housing bubble, embezzlement via ficticious loans, subprime loans (interest rates as high as 50% are not unheard of), and the slowing down of the global economy. Many of the bankers are also "white gloves," meaning they are professional money launderers working for public officials. This protection is not enough for money of these banks going under and some bankers have fled the country.
