  1. Rent in the rural interior of the US and Canada is only around 20% of what it is in Manhattan. I bring this up because cities below a certain size are not counted on housing statistics and these "rural areas" are where rent is cheapest

  2. I knew a manager at an airspace manufacturer making small aircraft parts. He pointed out his company always placed their factories in small cities or rural towns where the cost of living was cheap and simply set the starting wage to the average local wage. The result was good talent for less money, and most of their costs was in labor. Keep that in mind when you deride states with substandard wages.

  3.  @scottstempmail9045  Exploited?!?!?! Pendejo, I repeat, the starting wage is the average local wage with the managers, engineers, and programmers getting paid significantly more. It's a good living because you can rent a one bedroom house for $400/month.

  17. @Look_What_You_Did  depends on the industry. In CNC milling for aviation there's the material which you can't do much about and then there's labor which includes repairmen trained to troubleshoot the specific machine.
