  3. Yes. Mostly in places with small slave populations. Many northern states in America simply made slaves uninheritable, removing slavery within a couple generations. Normandy in the 11th century also outlawed the buying and selling of slaves, and while we don't know exactly how effective this was we do know that slavery was not the norm in high and late medieval France and England. Mexico also outlawed the ownership of slaves, but had several major exceptions which included slaves legally bought in another country and followed their masters into Mexico.

  4. Clarification on the "indigenous" population. It refers to peoples with traditional governments outside Brazil's control. It is NOT an ethnic distinction since even at this point ethnic Portuguese were outnumbered by natives with Brazilian citizenship.
