Meet new boss. Same as old boss.

The Soviets never had much in the way of computers. Only a handful of men controlled all budgets and by total coincidence they didn't get an electrical engineer that high up until the early 1980s. That's why some of the best planes of the Cold War had vacuum bulb radios.

Not really. The Russian tough soldier persona is to ignore safety issues in the name of performance in much the way American soldiers ignore minor injuries to show off they're tough. When I was in we literally weren't allowed "bitch pads" (bandaids) so I had to clean a road rash with germX. It hurt.

This was after The Thaw. That didn't happen

Best AWACs, but there's more to the story

People are saying that was false because it was really Soviet fighters acting as relays. It was East Pakistan, now Bangladesh

They have a couple dozen still in service.

There's a story to the start of Soviet long range bombers too. After WWII Stalin called Tupelev into his office and said he had 4 captured American long range bombers and now Russia needed long range bombers. Tupelev said no problem, he will reverse engineer them and make better bombers. Stalin said no, for now they needed a copy of the bomber made as soon as possible. Things get hilarious as the letter of these orders were followed even though the American planes used English units and the Russian factories used metric.
