China's bad but not that bad. In Afghanistan you must contend with 95% of the population being addicted to opium. The few schools that exist are largely fraudulent. And businesses are all either foreign owned, state owned, or not profitable.

Well, it was until the war started. But you'd also have to contend with the nationalization of many key industries and price fixing. Nazi Germany had more control over industry than Communist China but they allowed all previously private companies to keep being publicly trading. Although most stock markets were closed too, and private investors often forced to sell shares to the government and/or to party members. By the start of the war there wasn't much besides bonds to invest in but those were doing good.
