There's no allegation of piracy against Shell. The damage was more than like the result of robbers trying to steal FROM Shell. As in fools break pipes in order to steal oil, and there are thousands of unlicensed amateur refineries all over the country.

@FortitudineVincimus Easily, yeah. Recall land is cheap in Nigeria. Like a hundred bucks an acre. Also, the damage in question is more than likely connected to how it's common practice to break gas pipes to steal the gas, usually resulting in the death of the pirates and a loss for the company.

@bayersbluebayoubioweapon8477 Yes, but not due to oil (mostly). Sewage and trash goes into that river, and due to global trade the area can support a denser population now than ever before. Also, much of the oil pollution comes from open air amateur refineries often using stolen oil. Direct exposure to the fumes is as deadly as you think. This is a country where it is common practice to watch gas trucks crash, ignore the driver, and a whole mob forms to steal buckets of gas (many mass casualty events result.
