  3. In rice fields water is used because ruce can grow in waterlogged soil. But before industrial pesticides were invented sulpher was used because it's a fertilizer and bugs don't like the smell.

  4.  @SMGJohn  It's mined from volcanoes. Although these days its an impurity in crude oil so it's dirt cheap to get it from there. The only place that mines brimstone these days is a volcano in Indonesia where chunks of pure sulphur are broken off by the very poor residents and sold as is.
