Is Shanghai really indicative? The city only exists due to exports, as in the place was just a fishing village until Europeans established sea lanes for shipping. Shanghai is disproportionately effected by China's foreign trade.

@v1das007 Rose from poverty? A handful of people did, like those sleeping beauties shown on this channel. But even at the height of the bubble most people struggled to get rent and groceries and most rural areas saw little if any participation in the bubble. The improvement has been pretty modest to say the least.

@RCXDerp But Walmart China is majority Chinese owed, as per the law. Also, the Walton family doesn't run Walmart ever since Sam Walton died. It is likely they want their money for something else, and a google search reveals the Walton's charity foundation donates over 100 million bucks a year to education.

Walmart has over 10,000 stores and only 400 are in China. Although, it is weird the whole Walton family is selling. Hundreds of millions of dollars worth sold while they own tens of billions.

@RayQ101 Not necessarily. Without the sea lanes there's really no need to have a megacity at that location. Before Shanghai the big industrial cities were all inland along major rivers because they were mostly trading regionally.

@v1das007 Smaller and more remote cities in China. These are the towns where most Chinese people actually live and the cost of living is cheap but wages are poor.
