  2. The Black Monday Crash says otherwise. Back then, that was the most popular investment method among major funds. You can see the problem when markets went down, the automated reaction was large sell orders with an estimated 1/4th of the selling pressure due to "portfolio insurance." In either case, you're better off investing in an index fund.

  4. Not if you know anything. You can simply use them as a means to borrow money to invest, or you can use them as an insurance policy, or you can play the house to gamblers and sell options.
