  1. Correction: The alternative to 3d printing is subtractive manufacturing. It's where you take a brick of material and cut it into shape. Most Aluminum parts are made this way, but steel allows forging and plastic can be injection molded. The only real use case for 3d printing is custom parts made on site, like when an engineering firm needs to test to see if their machine works or an astronaut needs a replacement part.
