  1. A major factor is Chinese people have higher regard for American brands than Americans do. Office workers are known to put tea in old Starbucks cups just so people will think they're modern and sophisticated. Apple's success in China is just because for many years they were the top brand in America even though most Americans opt for lesser known brands with acceptable performance and lower profit margins.

  13. IIRC the only reason Apple puts up with the counterfeiters is because they can't copy as fast as Apple can invent new stuff and the counterfeits are worthless anyway. This is liable to change very soon as Apple is near the max of what is theoretically possible with computers. China has no genuine phone brands because they lack the money and expertise to make the parts.
