Try the other way around. A lot of thieves present makes nations poor.

@fooboomoo crimes certainly render the victims poorer than they. But on a macroeconomic level piracy is a wasteful enterprise, as a thief's profession doesn't actually produce anything and often they destroy things/people in order to steal. Also, crime-proofing efforts also cost money that could be spent elsewhere. More importantly, crime can render legit enterprises unprofitable, like in the recent rioting in South Africa that forced many stores closed due to total loss of inventory to looters. Other more qualitative wastes result like in education. I saw one report from the Central African Republic where apparently elementary school teachers get death threats over grades. This produces a clear trend where the most of the few students that get into high school are not the best students, but rather people personally connected to men with guns. The wages of sin...

Be careful what ongoing ponzi schemes you call out because these guys can get extremely litigious. Of course the suits go nowhere, but that doesn't stop them from punishing you with the process.

@qbeats2062 don't assume I'm a conspiritard, it's just a chicken vs egg argument

Dear Wall Street Millennial: I'm sure a lot of your views would love to hear about the Albanian Ponzi Scheme Bubble. It was very similar to this story, but there were a lot of major scams in a very small country. Mamy of the scammers were caught, but the country went bankrupt and general rioting resulted and looting of government buildings. This was part of the start of the Kosovo War, but that's prolly beyond this channel's scope.
