  5. Most of the infrastructure and hirer education was built by the French colonial government and later some US investors. Year after year, a little more of it falls apart due to corruption, incompetence, and infighting. Year after year, people borrow or scam to maintain their lifestyles. For instance, it's common practice in Lebanon to lure in immigrants with promises of pay they can't keep. Once in country they take the "kafala's" passport and don't pay them, or lock them up, or beat them, or use them as sex slaves. Lebanon is the largest abuser per capita of prescription meds. IDK what effect that had on the hospital in the video. The railroads were abandoned during the civil war and were never rebuilt. But there's still a railroad department that draws a budget. Large fires due to the total lack of occupational safety is common. State subsidized gasoline which was how many Lebanese could afford driving. Much of said gasoline wasn't sold in Lebanon, which was fraud. Much of the gasoline was smuggled into Syria for money. Much of the subsidy money was pinched. Suddenly the state runs out of money and the gas stations run out of gas. The list goes on. And on. And on.

  11. Lebanon didn't have much oil, and in the oil states the revenue from those enterprises doesn't effect common people much. Lebanon has exported limestone, natural gas, salt, and agricultural goods and they imported modern manufactured goods. It comes down to systemic incompetence, corruption, and infighting. There's only a couple dozen major issues.

  22. That sure as hell isn't the reason, as the sanctions only apply to a handful of Hezbollah soldiers. The reason comes down to incompetence, corruption, and infighting. For instance, for a couple decades the electricity broke often and was repaired slowly. There are only a handful of qualified linemen and they would hire their personal friends to pad the budget. When they did work it was almost always to fix lines that lead to their neighborhoods or to the house of someone with bribe money. This gave rise to "generator mafias" who owned private generators they'd rent to neighbors at inflated prices. That is but a small part of the degeneracy.

  26. If Lebanon were that dependent on the US, we'd own them. Nah, there's a immense list of symptoms of infighting, crime, and poor education in Lebanon. Like how the negligence in the Beirut blast was only distinguished from hundreds of other accidents in Lebanon by its size.

  30.  @soulmydear  largely yes. Due to hyperinflation no one outside Lebanon will take Lebanese Pounds and it's even avoided inside Lebanon. The most common alternative is dollars.

They all squatted on land to the infuriation of locals and were ignored by the government so that the street of the camps were taken over by gangs. The Palestinians are the grandchildren of actual refugees and have lived there all their lives and are still disenfranchised and subject to deportation (even the ones with dual citizenship). The Syrian refugees included a large numbers of soldiers and gangbangers so there was quickly a series of wars over turf. Marriages between Citizens and Refugees are discouraged, and Refugees have difficulty finding jobs as few Citizens will hire them due to parentage. It should be noted that one of the big concessions most Arab states wanted from Israel was the "unconditional repatriation of refugees" when that entails the unconditional depopulation of the squatter camps. Lebanon really did reap what they sow.

  34. Infighting, corruption, incompetence. For instance, weed was illegal but extremely common in Lebanon until recently. Most of the growers belonged to local militias that were effectively above the law as they fought their own wars and ran their own turf. These guys WANTED TO KEEP WEED ILLEGAL so that they could maintain their near monopoly and charge inflated prices.
