  3. In Latin America, America is a continent. Everywhere else, America is a country. Even Putin, the Iranians, the Native Americans, and the Africans refer to America as the country.

It doesn't matter if it makes sense or not, the fact is it has entered the vernacular that way and won't change anytime this century. In fact, if you wanted a name that made sense the continent would be named after Columbus, not America.
