  4. Cyanide is harmless if you have the antidote. IIRC, it reacts with cyanocobalin to form vitamin B12. The only problem is you need the equipment and expertise not to kill yourself. Also there's simply not enough of the mercury to poison the only country, but there's enough to render the immediately area downstream of the mines uninhabitable.

Overpriced goods would sit on store shelves until sold on black market. Underpriced goods would sell out immediately only to be resold at fair value. This was made worse by Soviet monopoly, as Lenin started the trend of destroying capitalism by debasing the currency. Even jeans had black markets since they weren't made in the USSR. The few that trickled in sold for as much as $300.
