  4.  @eze8970  correction. They wanted to rule EACH OTHER. Every tribe and party had it's own list of grudges and sought dominance either in the national government or local. This is why it's often hard to tell what they want as they'll brawl with all their neighbors no matter what you do. This is also why it was so difficult for Britain to make formalized borders as when the border were in place they were "colonial vestiges" and when they were lost they suddenly became the "legitimate border." All entities argue in favor of whatever gives them more land and beat up anyone who says otherwise (literally).

  6. That's true for all wars. The aftermath set up of one war is ordinarily the prelude to some totally unrelated conflict years later. However, blaming all current wars on the world wars is preposterous, because if men weren't fighting over one thing we'd just fight over another.

  11. Not even remotely. There was no world war in 2014, there was no civil war in 1941, there were no Russians in the ME in 1941, there were no Vinchy anywhere in 2014, Jihadis didn't control Syria in 1941, and the Axis didn't control Syria in 2014.

  12. Turf switches hands lightly in that part of the world and borders are just lines on a map. During the Ottoman period it often wasn't clear if that area was part of Iraq or Syria and during the Revolution period it is not known who controlled the streets as the allegiances of tribal and municipal leaders changed yearly.

  15. It's hard to really tell as no one person spoke for the Arabs. The Syrian government were insubordinate collaborators and the dissidents were tribal forces and all the above fought each other as often as anyone else. One thing for certain was any independent Syrian Sultan would be hostile to everyone as they carved out a new empire corresponding to Ottoman Syria and any other odds and ends they could pilfer.

  34. "So many wars" is a bit of an exaggeration. Some of those conflicts would have happened anyway, and many areas saw nothing important happen.

  39.  @oussb7660  the Syrians were extremely racist towards Jews and treated them the same as the Turks and Kurds treated the Armenians. What he said isn't a "racial slur," it is literally what happened. And their motives had nothing to do with politics, they were simply an easy target for pirate, human traffickers, and for tribal expansionism.

Some murdered or jailed for their property, others not allowed to work or buy groceries, many synagogues were banned arbitrarily as they were called "Zionist organizations," and others simply beaten with impunity. Those who did not flee all died sadly. The Syrians promptly forgot they ever had local Jews. Their parents and teachers all refused to talk about it or lied saying they fought Zionist infiltrators/spies. A similar story occurred in Iraq, Egypt, Yemen, and Iran.

This included Hatay, Palestine, Transjordan, and maybe Lebanon. This was also the lead up to the ethnic cleansing of the Mizrahi Jews. And yes, the Arabs were extremely hostile towards Jews and equated any ethnic or religious Jew with the soon to be formed Israel. To be fair, there was so much infighting and so little competency in Syria that it is unlikely any coherant alliance with the Axis could gave been formed.
