Like lending to the king in exchange for a promise of protection, or simply making an equity investment and taking a cut of profits rather than fixed interest.   41. A big part of the whole thing is more subtle. Namely why you might kill a baby. Back in those days, the Germans were largely fighting the sons of men their fathers had fought, so many of them would have said that you might want to kill the babies too in order to prevent the next generation from fighting too. Of course, there were more Germans that believed this at leat partially than there were Germans willing to actually kill a baby.
