  1. About the airlift: Another factor was lack of spare parts. It took ages to get things fixed because things had to be shipped from Germany from factories that were getting bombed.

  2. In all fairness to all involved: Everyone will fight for food if they need it and everyone will spare food if they can. You see a clear pattern where the Germans with access to supplies didn't starve, while the Russians spared what little food they had and stole things the prisoners did not need.
