To be fair, most countries were slightly socialist at the time. Where I'm from we lost big on a railroad bubble. The local newspapers argued the rails should be nationalized not because private rail companies were bad but because rails were risky and hugely expensive and that was something all these local rail firms couldn't do. They said it was best for everyone for the guys with the deepest pockets to bear the risk. What they wanted sorta happened as now a half dozen mega-corporations own the rails.

@FortniteBlaster2 chinese state enterprises simply have unfair advantages and only "sensitive" industries like newspapers, TV, and armed police are required to be state controlled. Nazi Germany saw everything state run but groups within the state forced to compete with each other

@namei8967 and immediately get offed. No, governments regardless of origins tend to keep paying people regardless if they have work for them. What has happened in Communist recessions is state assets are sold off and non-competes are voided. For instance, socialism in North Korea collapsed years ago because people were paid but the government had no work for them and there was nothing to buy with it. Kitchen industries spread to make up the gap and later this practice was allowed, putting NK back in the wet market economy it was before Communism.
