Another thing about British India is try as they might the Brits couldn't fully destroy the caste system. The Rajputs were the military caste and traditionally held a lot of power and refused to associate with other castes. The Brits didn't care and formed units from every caste, some of which were partially integrated with others. And since India is actually several countries forced into one colony, many unit recruitment were segregated on region as well. A system which continues even now.

@panzerofthelake506 you forget they were trying the "civilize the people." In modern terminology they were "devoloping the country" and "promoting democracy." The Brits never did like the forced prostitution, religious discrimination, and lynch mobs.

@metaphorpritam guilds didn't have the form or function of a caste, so lose the whataboutism, silly. Guilds were decentralized corporations and/or legal cartels (some had private armies) and back in the days they were common anti-competitive practices were often tollerated. In many towns it was near impossible to open up certain kinds of shops since all the suppliers/buyers signed contracts saying they'd only do business with members of the guild.

@TheImperatorKnight no one needs an excuse to print money. No one is playing 4d chess with war declarations just to screw you out of meager savings. The fact of the matter is nations invariably do throw all they got into a war and purse strings are just as important as logistics. Collosal bankruptcies are frequent, like the collapse of Napoleonic France where massive debts, collapsing industry, and the death of so many of the most productive workers meant there was simply no way to arm and supply troops anymore. A failure which can be calculated in currency and relative prices.

@panzerofthelake506 it's very much alive today, just under the surface. The government officially doesn't use the caste but many departments are segregated, individual officials often discriminate, and private persons are free to follow the caste system as they please.
