@haroldfiedler6549 dude, he was joking. Fun fact, BTW.

Never take a disgruntled employee's complaints about his ex-boss at face value.

It is doubtful the rails Army Group B was using could have sent anything more than they did, and there were other offensives going on. Still, I think Fall Blau would have went better for the Germans if they went for a closer target, like Moscow and/or Leningrad.

@caryblack5985 I am aware of what happened on those fronts, they weren't the main thrust.

@caryblack5985 No one said they didn't, but I wonder what the max theoretical limits of what the rails could handle was as there comes a point where it doesn't matter how many you send, they'll all be backed up waiting for a train.

You're way to harsh on Halder just because he created a few misconceptions unrelated to the topic at hand.

@TheImperatorKnight he's also a primary source and didn't know all that was happening as it happened. He was also sour about being sacked and didn't blame himself for what happened. More importantly, he didn't want to get hung after the war. And as with most army officers, and here I speak as much from experience as from reading, there's the "to many chiefs, not enough Indians" factor. The fools at the top all think they have all the power and think they know what's best for everyone, so it's a sacrilege if they're ignored or marginalized. Whatever Halder's level of competency was, he really thought his way would save German lives and obviously wasn't happy when he both didn't get his way and a lot of people died because of those orders. There was a mirror image case in the Ardennes when a US Major insisted the Christmas dinner would draw artillery fire but was ignored and he didn't push the issue. Sure enough, a lucky artillery shot killed 10 men. The major shot himself. Emotions run high in war. Emotions cloud judgement.
