They were drinking wine on a beer budget and lying about living standards in their country.

That's the reality of the Middle East. Locals beating each other over who will rule a trash heap.

This has nothing to due with Covid. It's all about systemic incompetence, corruption, and infighting.

@jackholler3572 licing? Typo? And PPP refers to relative cost of living. For instance, Britain makes more money per capita than Russia, but the cost of land and rent and farm goods are lower in Russia. Good PPP numbers is often a sign of general poverty. For instance, groceries in Africa cost a fraction what they do in America, but that is because the farmers are extremely poor and would be happy with 10 dollars a day. Also those PPP rankings are useless because it varies wildly depending what basket of goods you measure. And the numbers are super easy to manipulate for that very reason. In Turkey's case, seeing how a lot of people's livelihoods are collecting recycle on foot and every last bit of modernization comes from Europe and NATO, it seems they're not really a middle income country.

@srgeas1292 I don't know where you think I'm from but you are wrong. And that's not necessarily the case. Hardships make borders more fluid but not warfare is a competitive field. I.E. the collapse of the Turkish economy means it's much more likely Turkey's neighbors will carve out territory at their expense.

China's inflation is pretty high. In fact, their currency is super volatile due to lack of any accurate economic data.
