  5. @taxi I'm subject matter expert. Before the Ba'ath took over Syria averaged a coup a year. And before that it was a French colony. And before that it was a Ottoman colony so lawless that not even property deeds were a thing.

  7. @taxi Damascus was the first city we know of, but the archeology is limited that far back (stone and mud brick lasts, wood doesn't). There's evidence of sophisticated human activity in much of Europe and Asia back then including crops, writing, and fortified towns.
