The Nazis also used it as rocket fuel... they had trouble with the volumes in the tanks deminishing over time, so they added a laxative and a large portion of the crew was out of commission at any given time. They poisoned it, but then one guy found a way to remove the poison and sell the alcohol. This sounds hilarious, but it was really depressing as this was near the end of the war and the men were simply drowning away their hunger and misery. There was even talk of shooting the next guy they caught drunk just to scare the men into submission.
