  1. Soil liquifaction. When land becomes slowly submerged in water for whatever reason, they become useless long before disappearing below the water as the water tables rise and soil becomes soft (all buildings collapse).

  2. I've heard that before, but Atlantis might refer to something else regardless if that is true. At the location of Atlantis there is an underwater mountain range on the mid-Atlantic ridge. This ridge is shrinking as the Atlantic expands and we know for a fact sea levels varied considerably across antiquity. It could simply be there were a few small islands that were abandoned due to soil liquifaction and those people went to Europe, hence why Plato heard exaggerated rumors of the place
