  1. It literally was. This is Rhodesia, where what little modernization that exists was in a handful of small cities spread over an area much bigger than Texas. A lot of stuff was locally sourced or simply didn't exist.

  2. Imagine a skilled machinist using all the tools in his garage to make the best gun he can. That's Rhodesian industry. There were some small cities with small factories, but most Rhodesians lived in farm/mining towns where a lot of things have to be locally sourced because the next gas station is dozens of miles away. Now the Rhodesians are gone, and there is nothing. The Zimbabweans live in shacks and huts and poke their cattle with sticks and even the ones that have Rhodesian educations can't use them.
