@Shakeel Mohideen you know if you so much as googled oil drilling statistics you'd the middle east doesn't produce that much of the world's oil AND they are wholly dependent on US companies to drill it. Also, there are other exports around there like stone, copper, phosphate fertilizer.

They have a state owned oil giant, but the handful of skilled workers they have that aren't foreign are all the sons of oligarchs with western degrees. There's no distinction between the king's personal funds and state taxes, and they've defaulted on payments many times and each time they simply raised taxes/fees/fines on foreign oil drillers. Meanwhile life down the road among normal people largely goes on as it always has, except some things are heavily state subsidized and other things are debilitatingly expense.

@Dana there is no we. The sovereign wealth fund is the king's personal property. I certainly ain't the dumbass involved if you don't even know the most basic facts. And the House of Saud has actually never ran a profitable venture. They've frequently had to raise arbitrary taxes, fees, and fines to make up for deficits. It only ever worked because the foreign drillers were making good money. The Saudi oil giant is actually the sovereign's investment into foreign drillers... Using money extorted from the same foreign drillers.

@Dana If you are speaking of Saudi Arabia, they not only depend on a handful of exports, which is risky, but most Saudis cannot even the smart phone you hold in your hands.

@Dana I know phones are the only way to get porn over there, but your neighborhood definitely is not the norm. Some people aren't paid, they're scammed into slavery, and some people get several grand a month. Some people are still nomads, and some people live in highrise apartments. Some things are locally made for cheap (like food), some things are state subsidized (like housing), and everything else is inexcusable to the bulk of the population. But more importantly, there's a preferance for prepaid phones and Nokia brickphones. A smartphone has a touchscreen, and most can't afford them.

Even the invasion of Byzantine Syria was four independent invasions done by men who immediately turned on each other.
