@jimmahr.4665 there was some of that, but the issue he is describing largely didn't exist.

@XxBlindoutxX historian here. Crazy stuff happened in the industrial revolution because obvious regs didn't exist, but that didn't make people less honest

Lying isn't necessarily in this instance. Battery fires are impossible to extinguish so firemen just cordon off the flame. And there were major vehicle recalls over battery fires.

Often a bunkbed and cafeteria is provided, so they are not in total default. Even so, city jobs are not seen as just jobs but as lottery tickets because factories tend to work like Hollywood in China. The cities are super expensive but the countryside supplying them is stupid cheap. Think 20 dollar rent in village versus 600 dollar rent in city, so farmers will get seasonal jobs between harvests in the cities and live on the streets or in a crowded dorm.

The Victorian era had better products, the lack of regulations just allowed snake oil to exist. And BTW, it was Chinese expats selling literal snake oil as medicine.

Not exactly. In tech news, which is mostly about inventions and ponzi schemes, everyone is freaking out about DeepSeek but slowly everyone is realizing it's just copy-pasted ChatGBT. Almost no news from China hits the front page and most people don't realize things like involuntary organ harvesting ended years ago.

Disposable dishwear is perhaps China's most reliable product
