  1. The insane speeds of the SR-71 is why is was so expensive. Titanium was used in order to survive higher air friction while staying lightweight, and this was difficult to mine, refine, and machine. Also they were consuming half the world's supply, so they had to set up a shell company to buy some from the Soviets.

  5.  @Genius_at_Work  I forget the exact number from Ben Rich's book, but it was some crazy large number that forced them to do business with Russia who produces an equally large portion of the world's titanium (titanium is cheaper in Russia than anywhere else)
