  3. I'm getting a history PhD and I can say emphatically that you should never do this with the intent of making money. The only job that requires this degree is professor and you'll spend at least a hundred grand and years of hazing in grad school and have few if any job offers afterwards. There's still a steady stream of applicants because this job attracts egotistical bastards. Don't ask what I want to do with my degree. I cannot tell you.

  6. About these South American "prisons." Most are just urban exile where the government sticks you in there and doesn't feed you or ask questions. The residents are very poor as they must fend for themselves, but rich criminals literally run the place for better or for worse, forming their own strange little prison community.

  9. Another thing about British India is try as they might the Brits couldn't fully destroy the caste system. The Rajputs were the military caste and traditionally held a lot of power and refused to associate with other castes. The Brits didn't care and formed units from every caste, some of which were partially integrated with others. And since India is actually several countries forced into one colony, many unit recruitment were segregated on region as well. A system which continues even now.

  14. An extreme case of the representation problems you bring up is in Turkey, where elections are intentionally rigged in favor of the incumbent party. Most Turks vote for tiny parties, representing specific classes of persons and/or small communities. But the minimum threshold for getting a seat in Congress is high while the minimum threshold for forming a government is low. Meaning that small parties MUST ally with big parties or let their votes go to waste. And the incumbent has access to the censorship apparatus, appointment powers, and national budgets so they can easily bribe some parties and shut others up. Needless to say, every time an incumbent President dies there's a small war.

Hitler, I'm not sure, as he didn't have a grudge against his parent's religion and he equated the Vikings and Holy Roman Empire with the Germans. The only place all Socialists would agree on wasn't imperial would be archaic "pristine" hunter-gatherer clans that we know little about.

  32. Not exactly. The German state set the prices for everything even if it destroyed the profitability of certain ventures. For instance, the German trains were required to charge only enough to break even while the state would build any future rails needed. Free market governments set ration size and price when there was a shortage.
