Lucky him. Lucky you. If you provide more than half of his support you claim him as a dependent. Use tax credits to modify your home for safety, walk in shower, and the like. It’s only been five decades. Not routine to live multi generations…..it went without saying. Better for everyone. Kids who grow up with a grandparent or other elder…it’s an advantage.

We have to share housing. Hook up with others in need, or soon to be in need. Buy shares. Co-ownership. Shared responsibility. Use a Go Fund Me approach. People view, and loan or contribute using that platform. Use a round Robin approach, couch surf until your number comes up. I have a back room near the shared bathroom, could "lend it" six weeks a year. Stay here for work exchange.I need shelves in the garage. What was this poor woman paying in storage unit fees? No relatives with space for a few months?

@toddhastings5548 We are here for specific reasons. Love, honor, respect, forgiveness, and expectancy, are combined with personal growth. We can grow out of a less than favorable childhood, no one wishes to see a parent living homeless. If one can’t forgive…turn it over to someone who can help. Doubt that a mother who posts her child’s photo to her storage facility wall could be abusive , but maybe. It’s the states, and the county’s responsibility to provide resources that are so easily compiled. Homeless people pay taxes. There are abandoned homes, tax lien sales, boarded up schools , homes where elderly live who would welcome the company. Retrofit existing homes to provide living space that is profitable, attractive and safe. Where will the money come from? Where is the lottery money going?

Affluent, well educated, people are living in tents under bridges. In San Francisco, can say it’s high cost of rent. That gets us off the hook. Like your comment….typical male…she knew what she was getting in to. It’s possible to handle this. Outside DC, Montgomery County MD, there are no more homeless vets. None. They bring the services to them, they retrofitted buildings, and not castaway buildings either, well located nice surroundings, good transportation, near needed services. Possible to do. History has it that there were almshouses. Society’s last stop for poorest of the poor. A program like FDR's Civilian Conservation Corps was hugely successful. Bridges, roads, tree planting, all the work magnificent. If it could get through our present Obstructionist party in the House is unknown.

@barbararexroad5897 What we need is not a WaitList, it’s a Job Jar. It’s a community action board. There are people with room, their chores go begging because they can’t find anyone to show up at twice minimum wage. Easy work, car fare, hours of your choice. Nursing homes are understaffed and sometimes nobody…..there are homeless people who had been in the health industry. Live in, exchange for a mere four hours staff work so it doesn’t get stale. In situation like yours, you can see the handwriting on the wall. Don’t limit yourself to a Waitlist. If it were effective, there’d be no waitlist. Craigslist is free. Post as a caregiver, small salary, private bathroom, five day week. Three week trial. No questions asked, you like me, I like you, it’s a deal. Otherwise I'm off to the next. Homeless people talk to each other. Nomadic people are talking to each other and should be talking to the people who need work in exchange for a room. Talk to people. Be ready with an information card. Give detail, but a neutral address for safety, or an email. Giving a trial period works…will renegotiate in six weeks, let’s try it. Don’t be homeless, be an itinerant roomer. When you’re looking for a job…that is a job. 24/7. Kiss a lot of frogs. Be ready with a followup. People always leave this out. Remember when I asked if you knew somebody….have you heard anything further? Here’s my card. They’re more apt to answer because they’ve talked to you before. Personal appearance at churches…I can clean classrooms for a place to bunk. Help me find a widower who can rent a room.

@bessieknox Fun to think of. I like old movies, so many were centered in rooming houses. Doing Ancestry, I got lost ….looking at boarding homes in Washington City as it was then called. Nearly all members of Congress did, though some were housed in hotel rooms. Lincoln died in a rooming house. Not many know Peterson House, refer to it as House Where Lincoln Died. Some families offered table board…..means come to eat. Rooms if needed, but have a seat for supper, if not. Like a subscription….we’re eating anyway, pay weekly, show up. Must have been wonderful for new immigrants, learning language and customs. There was a built in labor pool, enslaved people didn’t show up until later Census, but they were there. Then, a steady stream of young Irish women employed as servants. Fascinating subject, though too little is written. Now we’d have selfies, people posing with their dinner plate.. You’ve got a great idea there, would be a huge hit. May or may not be less work than a bed and breakfast. Let us know. Don’t skimp on household help, pay well, and keep it short, four hours so it’s not burdensome. Like cleaners work better in teams.

I can organize and downscale your utility room, but it’s a two day job, I’ll have to bunk in overnight. If this were a church supper, we’d all fall into place. Have a penny? Leave a penny. Need a penny? Take a penny. Or maybe..humane society approach. Fill out papers, prove to be a good person. Go pick your dog. Thing that astounds…the dog always knows. Bingo. Forever Family is taking me home. Dog is smiling. They know. Pick an Unhoused Person in the same way. We’re using Waiting Lists. Self fulfilling prophesy. Waiting. Yeah ..waiting. I’m moving up the Waiting list. I’m waiting for a vacancy. Create a vacancy. Knock on doors. Set up a table….sell brownies and get leads. People have housing to share, they’re out there…find each other. Somebody knows somebody. Write your story, Lynn. It smacks of Shoemaker and Elves. The elves would leave the finished product. They knew of each other’s existence, but never breathed a word.

@barrygreen9341 Car purchase probably pre-dated the homeless situation. Many layers to the problem. One is…the resistance one has to move further out, or to share housing. Scared, exhausted comes with homeless. Most of us are one paycheck away from it now.

@mftd9316 Turn it into stepping stones. Shared housing is the answer. Just the right property, but be willing to move out a little. Get a big deposit, and a written agreement. If it doesn’t feel right after three months, no questions asked…bye. Return the big deposit so they'll have it to move out. People had one bad experience in college, and never want to share again. Set it up with the right house, build in costs to clean and maintenance, a separate deposit for a pet. It’s not as tough as we make it out to be. I quite literally did not see my downstairs tenant for four months. We emailed daily, but not seen. Turn the situation into a positive. Seeing a lot of ads asking for Golden Girls living.

@joyceboisvert9167 County has long held…no new building unless affordable is set aside. Cannot build or get approved. And it’s a hefty percentage, not one or two units. Takes it out of the hands of Not in My Backyard, which can be county, zoning board or just people who have theirs and don’t care about others.

@blkbrn1952 Well said. Others will benefit from your story. I've told others….those people were tough. Stubbornly tough. It’s not enough to say…there’s a room here for you—it’s too easy to ignore, and it’s a little flippant, if well intentioned. Cheat. Say, will you come stay the weekend to feed the dog…he goes out by himself. Or…delivery is coming, can you be there to sign? Cheat. After Dad is there a few times it will feel like home. We are programmed to resist change. Need to establish new things. Ease into the change. Nobody can expect an older person to just show up. A 3 day holiday weekend here and there…start that way, show them how it works. Things are coming up fast. Tiny houses, medi-pods, bring the future faster please. We need to keep our family near.

Everybody looking for a Vacancy. Look for a Retrofit. Here’s a house. With modest investment of free donated material, two or three units can be made. Then, share utilities. Share a car, share cable and internet. The county knows where these homes are, with a wave of the pen, they should bring people in need in touch with others. Renovate. We are living in 1950 tract housing and 1950 tract thinking.

@riitaalin Understand entirely. It’s frozen history though, can never change it. Friend, at her fathers gravesite, had attorney step up to her to say she got nothing, siblings did, she did not. You’d think she’d know why. She did not. Doing FH's tree, his relative left $10 each to first four kids. New kids got it all, and it was substantial. It hurts. Hurt me and was former husbands family, not mine. Those siblings fought it, but the fact that he left them ten dollars would convince any court that it was intentional, not a mistake. So, more genealogy…his father had done the exact same thing in his Will. Hurts forever, I’m sure. Do this…let kids see their lack of attention in black and white. Post the activity, if any, to a shared calendar. Let them see months went by. Or…get a timeshare and have Also Thanksgiving, a week before, or week after. The place will be neutral, pot luck means nobody works too hard. As you mend fences…use Zoom. "How many here think that they’ve been good to mom? raise your hand" Hmmm, well, truthful anyway. You have a right to your anger. Turn it around on them.

@madonnaclark4074 Well said and 100% correct. City governments address the homeless problem by taking away benches Some homeless are mentally ill, some are crabby. I’d be, if I slept on the sidewalk all night. There are abandoned properties and abandoned people. Nothing will change by itself.

******WGBH should win accolades for this presentation. This is bringing people together. Whomsoever thought of the idea should be promoted, with higher pay. Now Everybody…use sponsors of WGBH, and tell them why. Support this kind of programming. Use their sponsors, get more sponsors. But….find a way to break it down…over 2K comments, too many to read. @karens1967 Point well taken. In 15 years there should be improvement. Would be interested in knowing…how many Congress members live in their offices ? They should understand homelessness. They freely admit to bedding down, rents so high in DC area. Joe Walsh had his wife live in too, says so himself. If any consolation…other countries are having same housing crisis, Brits and Australians,too.

@hmt5oo Crossed my mind the other day….this rent raising en masse….something is going on. Warfare, meddling, algorithms, Sim City. Landlords never that well organized. City by city? there’s something to this. That eviction through no fault…where did that come from? Somebody is marking the cards, the game is rigged.

No excuse for this. There should be sleep pods. Have the idea right with campgrounds, where there is intended space, outdoor pavilions, food halls, sanitary bath houses and recreational pools. This is like Grapes of Wrath. Every state with a lottery….the mechanism is there, open a game just for finding homes for the Unhoused, Call it Grapes of Wrath. Massachuetts has a good lottery page, sells many games out of state by subscription. Most states are lame. Utterly. New game called Grapes of Wrath. Winner gets a Tiny House. Love the graphics? Ride the wave, like— what’s the alternative. Housing Shortage? After ten years? No longer a shortage…malfeasance is more like it. You have it…they know your name, they answer your call. We need to copy that technique. While we’re trying to solve these issues, the hired help in Congress is thinking of some conniving way to undo successes. We’re paying them to solve problems. With it being Martin Luther King Holiday…..let’s think. …How did they do it? Every conceivable barrier was placed in their way. The people were together. They met in church basements. @jimmiegregory8386 Can be straightforward. Make it three month term. Renegotiate or renew? Here we keep a kitchen binder. This is what a clear kitchen counter looks like. Does it match? Remember, you agreed we’d keep the rent at this level if you pitched in. Otherwise half of the cleaning crew monthly. We limit ourselves. People don’t evacuate a hurricane because 20 years ago, the evacuated and nothing bad happened.

@CKLoving We need to cast a wider net. There are people with room to share, they don’t know you're there. Have your details ready on a 3 X 5 card with a photograph, be able to post to physical bulletin boards and give to people you meet. Answer ads for home companion. If not in your town or city, move to where you can find it. Meet social workers in hospitals…if you need someone with references, here’s my card. People have to go to extended care simply because there’s nobody at home. The need comes up suddenly. Emphasize …this is three month gig…..people demure when they think they’d be stuck. Obviously, it can be extended by either party. We can’t wait for it to fall out of the sky. Governments have waiting list. Accurate name …waiting.

Well said. It’s Old Think. Worked for Then. This is Now, Zoning is a problem. They tried to keep people out. 1950's attitudes. Replace the commissioners with people who want to house people, Home Depot is selling Tiny House kits, it’s a backlog , but it’s out there. Retrofit existing homes to accommodate multi families. Tax credits and interest free loans to get people out of vans and into homes. We are putting up with this. Elected officials have no ideas. And get paid for it.

@kristenevans4557 It’s practical. We should be able to buy tiny houses at Costco. Instead of families paying 15K a month for assisted living, acquire a Medi-pod. An ADA compliant granny flat for kids' backyard. Granny flats are any zone….or fire them to get the Boards attention. Many here are coming from….pull herself up by her bootstraps approach. Why didn’t she think of it? Where's her family? Uhhhh Where’s her government? Nobody needs government to be nursemaids, just see that UPS, Amazon, Walmart, FEDEX pay tax. Use the money corporations and individuals pay attorneys and legislators who keep them from fair share tae— use the avoidance money to actually pay tax. Blaming 70 year old for living in her car…blame tRump for paying $750 for the year in tax.

Connecticut had 13 taxpayers money of 1M each. Each. If I had that money, it wouldn’t have been unclaimed. Unclaimed money is that turned over to theState, usually deposit for cable or utilities. Could be substantial, insurance or stock proceeds. But wait…they’ll hunt a person down for an overdue library book, why can’t they find a person to give them their money? Why did you say? Why? In my state they exhaust themselves trying to find the rightful owners….they set up an information table at the State Fair. Innovation. The actual State Fair. Former husband's aunt died in 1983. She’s still dead forty years later, it’s Anticipated she will remain dead. Her unclaimed money would go to the Unhoused with her blessing, I’m sure, States have ga-zillions of dollars in unclaimed property. Another hush hush is….dying intestate…..no heirs, no will, no one comes forth. Ask the state where that money is, It’s worldwide. It’s always been Calcutta. Now they want us all to be Calcutta.

It’s not rent, in and of itself. It’s corporations which pay not a dime in tax. It’s Mitch McConnell. Those who fight against a $15 minimum wage are to blame. Jeff Bezos instead of opening in hard hit WV or Baltimore, moved to Northern Virginia. When you pay no tax, what’s the difference. Minimum wage is a political football, it’s how legislators are favored by business. Minimum wage should be indexed, take it out of their hands. Done. Automatic increases over time. Social Security is not intended to be total retirement income, it’s always been augment to one’s own savings or pension, a widows fund, a safety net to care for children if parent dies Prematurely. People are stuck on….we’ve paid into it all our working lives, which is true, But there's more to the story. It’s lack of planning. Any jurisdiction has outdated or abandoned property. There should be ongoing work to revive these properties to make affordable housing units which would benefit the whole community. Right now, a fund to buy housing, modify existing or build new…use a Go Fund Me model. People across the country would contribute. Better…invest. Occupy to pay rent in, once the purchase price is met, it’s owner occupied. People would invest, steady return. Waiting for state, county, and city isn’t working. We can see the need. Now…give us a discretionary fund…completely voluntary. Let me add a hundred a month out of my check. Paid with interest. When retired, I pull it out to use to move, downsize, buy or rent housing, modify to age in place. Not a commie plot…it’s a convenient way to invest—my money, no burden to family or government. "Should have thought of that " doesn’t solve the problem. I’ve known people who rested on the idea that their home was paid off. Never dreamed the annual property tax would be the same as purchase price of the home, or that a loaf of bread would be five dollars.

Tell cab drivers I meet…be a designer cabbie. It would take a while, but 30 customers later…..a client base. Go through churches, go through social worker office in hospitals, need a ride home. Need a dependable ride in. If mom or dad has appointments, kids have to take off work. You think the volunteer stuff is there….but more buyers than sellers . They need volunteers. Judith has easy load comfortable vehicle. If she volunteered five hours a week,she’d meet potential homeshare.

@karengiorella2690 Wonder about Timeshares. The regulations would preclude, but there are plenty of them out there. Hard to re-sell, often can’t even donate. People own them, won’t go this year, yours for two weeks, just for the bed. Wear a floppy hat… I’m homeless….but needed a vacation….

@Gizziiusa Totally true 100%. But that’s where we come in. Humans are not good at predicting outcomes. It causes inertia because we don’t acknowledge that fact. Go to save somebody in a flood…..I’m not going anywhere without my dog. Oh. Never came up in rescue class. Oh. We have each other. We have the internet, we have cellphones. Let’s crowd source this problem. Find and photograph places in nearby locales. Just thirty miles away, prices fall for everything. Support group….that would consist of the thousands of others this is happening to. They’re invisible…know there’s more than what we’ve heard about on these boards. Plenty more. What people need is…try it. If in 90 days, you don’t care for it, turn back the key, we'll pack your van back up. Here’s gas money to get you back to the parking lot you called home. It’s fear of the unknown. Show people the way. Just get it started, it'll take off. Offer free help to homeowners who will allocate a room or backyard for a tiny house. Get investors …the occupants pay rent until the abode is paid for, with a handsome return for the investor who took a chance. Now, homeownership, on to the next one. Zoning laws are last century. Replace zoning obstacles with people who understand— living on sidewalks isn’t good zoning either. Waiting lists cause homelessness. We’ve been content to wait too long.

@John S. ཇོན True what you say. The 1950's Census became unsealed several months back. Can see right off, small family— mom, dad, kids. In the 1940 Census, shortage of housing, still Depression…households had boarders. 1930 and before, nobody lived alone, always a roomer or in-law appeared on the Census. We complain about the cost of things….keyword Things. Live with less.

They know exactly how it should be done. Zoning laws…..who cares. Zoning laws keep people out, keep entanglements. 3D Printer makes an attractive house in 24 hours. Start an investment company. New homeowner pays over five years. .when paid, move home to another nearby location. Waiting lists. Perfect name.

@kerrynight3271 Simple solutions. Separate entrance, a window becomes a door. Add a handicapped bathroom which would be tax favored or free with a grant. Shared space for dining and tv room. Take problems out…chores are hired out to professional cleaners. We have not had the will to solve this. Put a man on the moon, less than stated goal of ten years. This housing crisis is easy.

It’s failure of government. Always decades behind. Loosen antiquated zoning laws, encourage build solutions. We’ve seen land rushes before, encourage investing..or get out of the way. Preferably, both. WWII end brought housing shortages, but everything got caught up eventually, a building boom. Section 8 needs to be retired. Best to you. Divine knowledge….see….see what it’s like? Invisible…and scared…. You set it up just right to have firsthand knowledge, you can help with a passion, having been there. We need to stop looking to government. They’d do it if they knew how. We need to figure out…how many Unhoused could be drawing social security benefits if they knew how it was done? Set up access in tent cities. I’d volunteer every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Firsthand knowledge..…three times got her money doubled with persistence, "all you have to do is ask." Really? "What was the question" Cut the red tape…confusion costs more than the actual benefits. There are only so many illnesses…don’t need that many forms. Use public school nurses to handle easy intake. @micheleridenour593 Good for you . But , in your travels, look about being a designer driver, a personal shopper for a set clientele. Ever ordered a cab for airport and they didn’t show with a pre-made appointment? There’s grocery, but I need some houseplants. Take a photo, I’ll tell you which one. Can’t give keys to be copied to just anybody. Paint store, I know exactly what I want. It’s not feast or famine —-or endless walking and standing ,like grocery shopping service. To carry people is to get into yadda-yadda insurance rules. There’s a need for personal shopper. Met cab driver who had waited 2.5 hours in the sun, I was next fare for him, cabbies follow strict code. Suggested to him…designer personal driver…..use churches , it won’t take long, word of mouth. Whatever the number is 30 or 40 clients. He was self conscious about his accent. I said….computer doesn’t detect an accent. Anyone who says accent bothers is a jerk, you have a charming g accent. We need to stop asking for a job. Find tasks that need doing, BE a job.
