  9. You got it entirely wrong. PTRD was built as "quarter-automatic" weapon(eject spent case). BUT, because it's a war-time product, rushed into production, it had a bunch of problems. In particular - fail to open the breech and eject spent case. PTRD crew members routinely used wooden mallet to open the breech. So, it's not "to help extract case in harsh condition". It's harsh conditions that prevent rifle to work as planned and extract the case
