The letter W was developed from the use of VV and UU, which were interchangeable and used to denote the same “wha” sound of the modern letter. Overtime it was just streamlined into a more pleasant shape

VW did a W orientation real smooth here, I’m impressed. The only iteration of a W engine I was familiar with before was the Allison W-3420, and military aircraft engine comprised of basically 2 V-1710 12 cylinder engines mated to a common crankshaft. That gets me thinking, Jeremiah, I bet you’d love to look up weird uses of big ass airplane engines in road cars. There are some crazy builds out there in history.
