  2.  @vavsaftoiu  joining EU is not the same as joining NATO. The former by itself would have been perhaps more acceptable to Russia.

  4.  @vavsaftoiu  Sweden, Switzerland, Finland would be good examples. Russia was not at all aggressive after the collapse of the USSR. NATO was built to counter the USSR which disbanded the Warsaw Pact. Was was its role then? Countless backroom promises and even encouragement to Ukraine to join NATO were the final straw that broke Russia's back. Again, joining EU isn't the same as NATO that was looking for a mission after the USSR when it should have disbanded. Or at the very least, not 'move 1 inch eastwards'.

  7.  @vavsaftoiu  small correction. NATO was to defend against USSR and not Russia. Big difference after USSR went away.
