Why not? For new tech, it's perfectly reasonable unless there are vested interests in India that need protection. It's the same thing that have India unable / unwilling to join any multilateral free trade agreement, despite the country needing such agreements.

It a new tech, pal. Open your mind and stop protecting the old guards.

@vatsalchandan4626 you conveniently forget PayPal, SpaceX and Tesla, eh? Open your angry mind

@hiddendagger7291 keep thinking this way. No wonder India can never live up to its much touted potential. All regressive thinking...

@nerdydoshi7014 nope but the govt sat down with Musk and his team and created a welcoming package for Tesla. Example, Telsa is the ONLY wholly owned foreign car manufacturing facility in China. That's just 1 example among many bespoke measures. Indians are just an emotional mess... Think about the future and all the ecosystem that Tesla will facilitate in China.. Jobs, up and down stream suppliers, expertise, income taxes.. Jobs. Jobs, jobs. Import taxes relief for a trial run is a small matter. China also gave plenty of consumer rebates to offset whatever import duties before Tesla started making cars there.

'Democracy' at work.. Indian style. Modi needs funding from the tatas and ambanis etc so votes can be bought. The oligarchs must be protected from world class Tesla. Superb system!
5
@zoho6992 hahaha. Can your Tata do autonomous, AI aided driving?
5
@nerdydoshi7014 Indians must understand this... There are many other places to do business with / in...
5
@navan1087 then you should ban everything that is not made in India?
4
@LifeandLiving778 China imported Tesla for some years before Elon came wanting to start a factory. China rolled out red carpet for him both when he was just selling cars and of course, when he decided China market was also good to make cars domestically.
3
@ITheNoobBot OK genius. Give it a try. Sounds like you are better.
3
@subhajitkhilar3680 that's the retort you have? You lack imagination and are too emotional
3
@zalayashpalsinh9650 I disagree. What you are doing is just protect some dinosaur oligarchs who won't innovate till they feel threaten. That's the way it has worked for almost all countries
2
@Apeman Commeth Indians are too emotional for this. They are fanatically upset cause Tesla wants a trial with lower import duties and does not want to invest billions of dollars right away in making cars in India. They just want to collect the import duties and relax.
2
Elon Musk is smart. He saw what happened to Apple, Xiaomi and their Chinese / Taiwanese manufacturers in India. Labor unrest and extortion by local governments.
2
@ITheNoobBot if you say so
2
@karenvtechgal397 agree buu I think you did not get my reply to the OP
2
@prasannakumarreddy1604 and what is India good for?
2
@5Amandeep then Bharat can continue living in the last. Bull cart?
2
Astounding how protectionism and adherence to many discredited economic policies are rampant in India despite the state of its progress over the last 5 decades. Sad case. Not a chance it will be a 5T economy by 2025. Zero.

@kunal.9587 sour grapes, eh... Lol
1
@dwla16 US sells plenty in china. Ask apple, Intel, Starbucks, Nike, Boeing etc
1
@bravo dumb thinking but you can also import it from US or Germany if you are so dense about where it's made.
1
@happinessforever2565 dude.. You have to sow in order to reap.
1
@chinazieswillstartww3253 don't lie! There is no Tesla factory in Xinjiang. It's in Shanghai. Why do you always lie? You have poor upbringing.
1
@lakshyasingh4114 wow.. Very intelligent retort from you. 🙄
1
@surya19881988 you mean Musk? he is not from India and Indian is certain not the biggest market in the world! And he would be by far the richest person in India. Don't confuse number of people with potential buying power
1
@surya19881988 dude.. Telsa does business all over the world. Who said he wanted to sell in India because it's the 'biggest market in the world' '? You Indians need to understand that it is not the biggest nor the most lucrative anything in the world... By far
1
@umbrellacorporation5723 ever heard of WTO? FTA?
1
@ashokkumaran5752 whatever you think... Those belong(Ed) to him. Where do you think Tata got EV from? Certainly not in house
